From Amazon Editorial Reviews:
“Inventive, glamorous, gorgeous—since the beginning Vogue has set the platinum standard for fashion magazines the world over and has become an icon in its own right. Vogue’s covers sum up the superlative visual ideals of the whole magazine. For the first time, this book brings together in one volume nearly a century of covers both illustrated and photographic. Over 200 stunning images have been selected from an archive of more than 1,500. What sets Vogue’s covers apart is that each is so bold, so beautiful, and so emphatically different. They mark the course of history, chart changing fashions and ideas of beauty, and hold up a mirror to the cultural and social revolutions of the 20th century. Since 1916 Vogue’s covers have celebrated the most striking women of our age, captured by the century’s leading photographers, the greatest artists, and the most inventive fashion. Brilliant, captivating, and full of life, this is the face of the world’s most influential magazine and the original style bible.”

When Camden, NJ is in the news its usually because of the criminal activity the southern New Jersey town has become well known for. Well, thanks to New York hip hop fashion label Parish Nation and the students at Camden High School, the New York Times had something good to say about Camden.
Parish Nation gave the students at Camden High School an opportunity to create a new image by staging a fashion show at the school with the students as models and show assistants. Check out the New York Times article and watch the student models “strut their stuff” in the video. Parish obviously gained exposure for their label by giving the show, but the students are the real winners with their spirits and self esteem lifted, oh so high. Great job Camden High, we like your style.

The 21st annual Art Car Parade held in Houston on May 10 featured cars and trucks of all sizes used to create car art by local and out of state artist. A few of the artist made fashionable outfits to coordinate with their car theme. My favorite cars were the Yarn and Sewing Cars and my favorite artist outfit was the condom design.
As a fashion designer and knitter its always interesting to see yarn and fabric used in creative nontraditional forms. I’ve seen yarn used to create sculptures, clothing, handbags, shoes furniture, pillows, toys, dolls and now a car design. Yarn has become the “it” fiber for artist and designers. The Yarn Car artist, Tim Klein of Dallas created his design directly on the car by using velcro to hold the yarn in place. The Yarn Car is a 1967 Crown Imperial covered with over 4 miles of soft acrylic yarn. Tim’s work is truly amazing. The Art Car show winners can be seen at http://orangeshow.org/artcar.html

The Sewing and Craft car has spools of thread, scissors, needles, quilting and sewing supplies glued onto the car.

The Safe Sex artist used condoms to create her outfit.

On May 7, 2008 – September 1, 2008 The Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Costume Institute will open the Superheroes: Fashion and Fantasy exhibit and examine how fashion designers have interpreted the superhero symbolism in clothing. According to the MET: “This exhibition will explore the symbolic and metaphorical associations between fashion and the superhero. Featuring movie costumes, avant-garde haute couture, and high performance sportswear, it will reveal how the superhero serves as the ultimate metaphor for fashion and its ability to empower and transform the human body. Objects will be organized thematically around particular superheroes, whose movie costumes and superpowers will be catalysts for the discussion of key concepts of superheroism and their expression in fashion.”
This exhibit is definitely on my “to do list” for the summer. I’m looking forward to seeing the display of high fashion, superhero fantasy and art together. We can depend on the MET’s Costume Institute to put on an amazing show of beauty and fashion history. They always provide us with inspiration for fresh innovative design ideas.
